What is Gynecological Minimally Invasive Surgery?

Gynecological minimally invasive surgeries are types of surgeries the team at West Coast Women's Specialists perform without the need to make a large incision. Instead, the procedure is performed using less invasive approaches such as:

  • Laparoscopy
  • Hysteroscopy
  • Robotic device

Many minimally invasive procedures are performed on an outpatient basis at the office.

What are the Benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery offers a number of benefits when compared to open surgery, which is why the team at West Coast Women's Specialists offers them at the practice.

The benefits include:

  • Less pain
  • Faster recovery
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Less scarring
  • Improved accuracy

However, each patient requires individualized care, and while the team at West Coast Women's Specialists may prefer minimally invasive surgery, it’s not always possible.

What is a Laparoscopy?

A laparoscopy is a type of surgical procedure that uses a laparoscope, which is a surgical camera that gets inserted through a small incision in your abdomen that allows the gynecological surgeon to see your reproductive organs without having to make a huge incision to open your abdomen for viewing. Additional small incisions are made in your abdomen for the insertion of the surgical instruments to perform the procedure.

Common laparoscopic procedures include:

  • Removal of fibroids, ovarian cysts, or polyps
  • Hysterectomy
  • Tubal ligation
  • Treatment for urinary incontinence

A laparoscopy may also be recommended to assess reproductive health or confirm a diagnosis, such as endometriosis, which is a condition that causes your uterine tissue to grow outside of your uterus.

What is a Hysteroscopy?

A hysteroscopy is a procedure that uses a hysteroscope, which is a type of telescope, inserted into your vagina to your uterus to assess health. During a hysteroscopy, your OB/GYN at West Coast Women's Specialists may also insert surgical tubes through the hysteroscope to perform surgical procedures such as:

  • Sterilization
  • Locate an intrauterine device
  • Remove adhesions

A hysteroscopy is also used as a diagnostic tool that may assist in determining the reason, you’re having difficulty getting pregnant.

What is Robotic Surgery?

Robotic gynecological surgery is a very specialized type of minimally invasive surgery that uses robotic-assistance to perform procedures. West Coast Women's Specialist uses the da Vinci® robotic surgical system. This system allows the team to perform a number of gynecological surgeries with precision, including:

  • Hysterectomy
  • Fibroid removal
  • Sacrocolpopexy (treatment for pelvic prolapse)

For advanced minimally invasive surgical options, call the women’s health experts at West Coast Women's Specialists or schedule an appointment.
