Effective January 1st this year, the American Medical Association introduced a new code that changes the way providers report the pelvic exam and specimen collection portions of an office visit to the insurance companies. Several insurance companies have not introduced this information to their members nor educated their customer support staff on this code. This code has a charge associated with it that the insurance companies may pass on to you, their member. This means that it may be your responsibility through the deductible, coinsurance, or as a copay. This has a noticeable difference with annual or preventative visits – what used to be a “no expense” visit for you may now result in a patient copay, coinsurance, or deductible application. Hopefully, the insurance companies will make this become part of their Wellness or Preventative coverage soon to make up for this gap in coverage. We are doing our best to educate our patients with the correct information as soon as it becomes available to us. The American Medical Association and American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology are also working on this issue. Please let us know if you have additional questions.
Thank you for your understanding,
